May wine (Maiwein or Maibowle in German) is a German spring time tradition (especially on May Day), to celebrate the arrival of the sweet woodruff season. Sweet woodruff is known as “Waldmeister” in Germany, and is used as a flavouring for many popular drinks, sweets and desserts. There are many different Maibowle recipes with various fruits. Here’s a delicious recipe with woodruff and strawberries.
INGREDIENTS (for 2 people)
- 300 ml/ 30 oz. dry white wine
- 150 ml/ 15 oz. sparkling wine
- 2-3 sprigs of fresh woodruff
- strawberries
METHOD
- Chill the woodruff in the refrigerator overnight.
- Pour the wine into a pitcher and add the strawberries.
- Tie the woodruff together and suspend it in the wine. The stem ends should not touch the liquid.
- After about 20 minutes, remove the woodruff from the wine.
- Add the ice-cold sparkling wine and stir briefly.
- Strain into glasses filled with ice cubes.
